Super Basic Croquis Tutorial by Lovely-Whimsy Super Basic Croquis Tutorial by Lovely-Whimsy
Super Basic Fashion Croquis Tutorial Go!

Edit 6/13/12: I guess I need to clarify the purpose of this TUTORIAL, because most people just seem to be tracing directly over the example figure as though it were some kind of doll base.

This is NOT a doll base, please don't just trace over it and call it good--this is meant to be an at-a-glance reference for the proportional measurements of a style of fashion croquis, to help you CREATE YOUR OWN.

well, that's the most interesting use of my tutorial so far--but people seem to be using my image to trace from even though it's meant to be a fashion croquis proportion tutorial/reference and not a 'base'. I'm not going to tell you to take this down, but it has let me know I need to change the description a bit. thnx.

Thank you so much! I've been drawing for 3 years now and never studied the 9-Head Fashion Croquis even if I'm supposed to -- I thought I didn't need it. Today I tried your guidelines and it worked! So thank you again :D

YAY for this!
been trying to do create the right pose for some design work today with no avail. Then I found this and after drawing out a straight proportional coquis, all seems right in the world.

The design tutors in my course recommend 9 heads for as a basis design and presentation drawing, such a lovely book :)

Haha, I completely apologize for my comments yesterday. I wasn't in the nicest of moods at the time. But you are right, I am sorry for the way it came across and thank you for reminding me that the proportions vary from instructor to instructor.

Umm... quick not, A nine headed croquis is actually a 10-headed croquis.

It's nine heads from head to ankles, the feet are added on.

Im going to just quote my response to someone who made a similar comment:

It varies--some fashion teachers prefer the 8ish inches ending at the ankle--some go all the way to 11+.

The way I've shown is the way both my Fashion Sketching teachers taught me.

If they're too long looking it loses the aesthetic for me.

for me if im just sketching fashion i prefer to just use print off of croquis i have and use a piece of paper over it and draw the clothes and then trace any body elements needed it keeps your croquis clen and 100% reusable

Though the character I'm using this for is an anthro (or, rather, more animal than human, such as :icongoldenwolf:'s work), this model sheet/tut actually helps a lot on getting his core basics down and how they would situate on a human body. Certainly makes it a lot easier! Not to mention helps me work out the kinks before hand, so I don't go and draw an entire picture of him and find several things don't look right, ie ears or the tail.

I wish I had found this sooner rather than later, but I guess it is better now then, say, a year or so.

Also, this seems to be the only one with a generic standing pose that could easily be used for a male character, too, rather than just strictly female.

Nice, just a note that it actually should be 9 heads ending at the ankles, with the feet an additional 1/2 head or so.

All you would need to do is extend your lower legs, making them a full 3 heads in length, the gastrocnemius would be slightly past the seven head line, ankles like I said at 9.
